Soweto Theatre's video: Gibson Kente Musical Tribute at Soweto Theatre

SUPREME STORYTELLER GIBSON KENTE IMMORTALIZED IN SONG & DANCE AT THE SOWETO THEATRE! The Soweto Theatre is proud to announce a three-week musical tribute to culture luminary and godfather of South Africa theatre, Gibson Kente from the 7th to 17th December. Where Robert Sobukwe, Mirriam Makeba and Nelson Mandela left an indelible mark on our imagination, the late Gibson Kente played an equally consequential role. Plays like ‘How Long’, ‘I Believe’ and ‘Too Late’ amongst many others spoke to the heart of what indigenous South Africans experienced under a repressive and foreign regime. Gibson Kente is referred to as the father of township theatre. It is from the townships that legends like him have gone to influence the cultural, economic and political landscape of South Africa and various parts of the globe often under extremely difficult circumstances. Not only did Gibson Kente produce plays, he created the music used in the pieces he directed as well. Being the cardinal storyteller illustrating black pain, love and aspiration in the time of Apartheid, it is with great pleasure to announce that he will be commemorated in a musical tribute for a 3-week season at Soweto Theatre this festive. Gibson Kente was born in Duncan Village in East London and moved to Johannesburg to study Social Work, something he didn’t complete as the arts industry was calling. Some of Kente’s outstanding work was banned as it opposed the apartheid regime. He has been lauded by industry greats such as Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, Letta Mbulu, the late Miriam Makeba and Brenda Fassie for inspiring and shaping their careers. A father, producer, playwright, director and teacher, Gibson was a gift to South African arts and theatre enthusiasts will be treated to some of his great works this festive. Forming part of Joburg City Theatre’s memory project with A Tribute to the Manhattan Brothers and Gone Native: The Life and Times of Regina Brooks having run their respective seasons in the beautiful 436-seater auditorium, It is only fitting that a commemoration of one of Africa’s favourite sons be listed too.
