@Alan Dershowitz: What he won't say about OJ Simpson
Alan Dershowitz said in an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson that former football great and actor OJ Simpson would do well to stay out of the public eye. The discussion as news circulated that Simpson, who has served nine years in prison for armed robbery, will be put on probation. Dershowitz served as an appellate legal adviser to the "dream team" during the 1995 trial that saw Simpson acquitted of the murder of his ex-wife. "Going on TV will stir up controversy," Dershowitz told Carlson. He added that media will exploit controversy in treating Simpson after his release. He said, "Stay out of the public. Live a public life." He added, "But, he probably will not listen to me." Reflecting on Simpson's first trial, which was accompanied by controversy and minute to minute media coverage, Dershowitz said the former gridiron hero did well to stay off the witness stand in his own defense. As a corollary, he said that prosecutors should not have placed Los Angeles Police Detective Mark Fuhrman on the stand. Because of Fuhrman's racially-charged remarks that were made prior to the case, the detective's testimony was viewed as controversial. "We didn't win the case, they lost the case," Dershowitz said. There was widespread public speculation that Simpson did kill his former wife, Nicole Simpson and her male companion, even though Simpson was eventually acquitted in a televised trial that stirred racial animosities. On his show, Carlson asked Dershowitz about Simpson, "He did do it, didn't he? He did murder those two people?" Dershowitz answered, "As you know, a lawyer is not allowed to disclose private views. When Benjamin Netanyahu was elected prime minister of Israel, he called me and said 'I have a question.' I thought it would be about Palestine or Iran. He said, 'Did OJ do it?' And I said, 'Mr. Prime Minister, does Israel have nuclear weapons?' And he said, 'You know I can't tell you that!' And I said, 'You know, Mr. Prime Minister, I can't tell you that.' Carlson went on to say, "But the answer in both cases, I have to say, is the same , I have the feeling." Israel has scrupulously denied for decades that it possesses nuclear weapons even though it is widely assumed that it does possess them. Do you agree with Alan Dershowitz? Leave your comments below.
