"Indeed, the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword..." Hebrews 4:12 This week, our October sermon series on 'Re-Formation' takes us to the pages of scripture. What would it mean to re-form scripture? Or, more specifically, our understanding of scripture? As the author of The Epistle to the Hebrews puts it, scripture is like a two-edged sword. That means two things to me. First, as the author makes clear, the words of scripture have the power to change lives, to change us. Read in the light of the Spirit, God's Word is not some stale, dead, irrelevant work from thousands of years ago with little relevance to the challenges you and I are facing right now. No, scripture is living, and active, and present in our lives. On the other hand, a two-edged sword cuts both ways. You and I have witnessed the way scripture can be misused, misinterpreted, and abused to cause harm to people. Lots of people. That impulse in us to use scripture for our own purposes rather than God's purpose is what needs to be reformed. Let's talk about that on Sunday.
