"God loved the world this much, that God gave a beloved only child...to the world, not to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved." John 3:16-17 My favorite quote by E.B. White is the famous, "I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve, or save, the world and a desire to enjoy, or savor, the world. This makes it hard to plan the day." God is not beset by this binary, to savor or to save. God's love and appreciation of creation, including us, is what drives God never to give up on us. And that love is what moved God to send Jesus to save, restore, reclaim and re-form the world. 'Reformation' is our theme for October, leading up to Sunday the 31st, celebrated throughout the Protestant wing of Christianity as Reformation Day. Okay, I know it's Halloween also, but that's another matter. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther famously (maybe mythically) nailed his 95 theses to a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, which got the Protestant Reformation going. Pastor Lea and I want to look at the idea of re-formation more broadly, beginning with World Communion Sunday, and God's project of re-forming the world through the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. A project that John Chapter 3 ties to the idea of my rebirth, and yours. How fitting that, in a celebration of rebirth, we'll also be baptizing Declan James Haggerty! So don't miss it.
