He began his career with Atletico Calchin and impressed on a trial at Real Madrid in 2011 scoring twice and even featuring in a mini El Clasico against Barcelona but a move didn’t materialise. Alvarez went on to have various trials in his home nation at the likes of Argentinos and Boca Juniors before joining River Plate in 2015. The youngster really announced himself at the 2020 Copa Libertadores, where he was directly involved in 6 goals in 5 Group stage appearances and since then, Alvarez has become a crucial part of the starting eleven. Despite the versatility, this season Alvarez has mainly played as a centre forward and has led the line in a variety of front twos as well as on his own in a 4-3-3. He’s a very talented footballer with the raw attributes to play at the very top level. Alvarez is the quintessential Argentine forward, small in stature but big in heart, Alvarez is a street footballer. He’s got a lot of aggression and tenacity which makes him a good presser.But he’s also very technical which is showcased by his technical dribbling and two footedness. And to top it off he’s a very intelligent forward that has good awareness and off the ball movement but also great finishing ability. Alvarez is a forward that’s very good at linking the play. When playing as a lone forward he’s almost a false 9, playing off the centre backs and receiving the ball into feet. Once he gets into the final third, Alvarez either looks to make runs into the channels to stretch the opposition and get on the end of through balls, or he'll try to receive to feet and turn to face the goal. If he’s allowed to do this he often looks to get a shot off, usually using quick touches and body shifts to create a yard and shoot. When the ball is in his control he’s incredibly two footed and is happy using his weaker left foot to pass, dribble or shoot. With a reported 17 million pound release clause and his current contract set to expire at the end of 2022 it looks like Alvarez won’t be in Argentina for much longer. The 21 year old has been linked with a whole host of top European clubs with the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid all rumoured to be interested in the forward. But at the time of this video, Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United are reported to be front runners in the chase to sign him and the German’s two striker setup would benefit Alvarez, allowing him to find his feet alongside an experienced strike partner like Cristiano Ronaldo or Edinson Cavani.
