Statman Dave's video: How to Improve Man Utd s Corners

@How to Improve Man Utd's Corners
It’s no secret that Manchester United are bad at corners. Harry Maguire’s goal against Leeds was the club’s first Premier League goal this season scored directly from a corner and despite breaking their duck, Man Utd still aren’t proficient from set pieces. So join me today as I explain how Manchester United can improve their attacking efficiency from corner kicks. ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: http://bit.ly/StatmanDaveYoutube So what are they doing wrong? To start, Manchester United aren’t clearing the first man often enough. If the ball doesn’t reach your attackers it’s virtually impossible to score. They’re also targeting areas that are difficult to score from and even if a player reaches the cross, they’d need an unbelievable amount of quality and luck to score. But where there is the biggest opportunity for improvement is working on the execution of corners as a collective. We’re seeing the general timing of a delivery being off, attackers misreading the flight of the ball and overall, Man Utd lack a plan. So how can Manchester United improve? First, I’d change the set piece takers from Luke Shaw as the left footer and Bruno Fernandes as the right footer to Alex Telles and Jadon Sancho respectively. United also need a structure. When taking corners, more isn’t always better and less isn’t always more, you need balance with the number of players inside the box. What I suggest is that United load the box with 5 players: the 3 tallest plus two forwards, using Cristiano Ronaldo as a decoy and Bruno Fernandes as a poacher. I’d also hold Paul Pogba on the edge in the rebound zone where he can best use his shooting and dribbling ability, leaving three outfielders to recover loose balls and protect against the transition. ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: http://bit.ly/SMDTwitch Now with new corner takers and a structure it’s time to add plays and routines. What’s important with the routines is that they’re the goalscoring routines and shouldn’t be constantly used as they’ll become predictable and you’d lose the element of surprise. The build up is as important as the routine itself. The first play is flooding the 6 yard box and pinning the goalkeeper with the poacher, using an inswinger to hang the ball up. By creating little room for the defenders to manoeuvre you play to United’s height advantage over most teams and by pinning the goalkeeper and stopping them from claiming the cross, the corner taker can send in slower but more accurate deliveries - making this a more reliable method of finding a target. Well suited to an outswinger, this is all about your attackers starting from deep and making runs towards the goal at different times to create confusion. Ideally, this drags the better aerial defenders away from the penalty spot, which is your intended zone and where your best attacker is lurking. And the final play is all about creating traffic to block off defenders and create separation for an unexpected target. For United this could be Raphaell Varane or Scott McTominay, as most of the focus will be on Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo.
