So today I’m going to go through 3 different players that the reds could sign to fix their defensive midfield problem. But first what does an Erik ten Hag defensive midfielder do? His two Ajax sides saw two different kinds of defensive midfielders but the general role is similar. Ten Hag first needs his defensive midfielder to be good on the ball and composed in possession but also a mobile defender who can stop or control negative transitions. He achieved this using Lassa Schøne and Frenkie De Jong in his 18/19 Champions League semi-finalists whilst his most recent Ajax sees Edson Alvarez given most of the defensive midfield responsibilities. ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: http://bit.ly/StatmanDaveYoutube First up, the dream signing is Declan Rice. The West Ham man is a complete defensive midfielder and he’s up there with the best in Europe for his position. When he first emerged, Rice was just a destroyer, sitting in front of the defence and breaking up play with his ability as a ball winner but as he’s played more minutes, Rice has become much more complete. In possession he’s extremely composed with a good passing range off both feet. The England International is a very intelligent defender that reads the game superbly - often leading to Rice making interceptions. Despite turning down another contract offer from West Ham his current deal might not expire for another 3 years and because of his talent, the Hammers have slapped a 150 million pound price tag on his head. Ludicrous money but probably the best defensive midfielder in the world that’s gettable for Manchester United, Declan Rice would be the dream transfer. A more realistic transfer target is Aurelien Tchouameni. The 22 year old Frenchman would reportedly cost around 60 million, less than half of what West Ham want for Declan Rice. Tchouameni isn’t at Rice’s level but he’s still got a very good skill set. A big physical presence, Tchouameni combines his imposing frame with speed, agility and technical skill too. He’s got a good passing range, can dribble with the ball at his feet and is a great ball winner. Tchouameni has excellent awareness on the pitch. He’s constantly scanning his surroundings by checking his shoulders so he has a picture of the pitch in his head which allows him to make good decisions. He’s also able to play accurate disguised passes, a sign of a top level talent. Meanwhile without the ball Tchouameni is fantastic. There are lots of defensive midfielders out there. Boubacar Kamara, Kalvin Phillips, even Frenkie De Jong could all fit in at Old Trafford. But the numbers all point towards Ibrahim Sangaré. An old Statman Dave favourite from his Toulouse days, Sangaré has been improving under Roger Schmidt at PSV Eindhoven and at 24, the Ivorian has developed well. A great destroyer but also a very composed ball player, Sangaré came close to a 25 million pound move to Newcastle in January. Expected to be available for a similar price in the summer, Sangaré would be a cheap way to bolster Manchester United’s midfield, allowing funds to be spent upgrading other areas of the squad.
