With reports that Manchester United have increased their search for the next manager after Ralf Rangnick, today I’m going to be answering the question Who Should Be Man Utd’s Next Permanent Manager? Join me as I take a look at the tactical styles of some of the candidates as I assess who I think would be the best fit at the club. ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: http://bit.ly/StatmanDaveYoutube Julian Lopetegui has rebuilt his reputation at Sevilla but if United are going down that route then I’d rather see Graham Potter at Old Trafford. Brighton have been sensational under Potter, playing in a variety of shapes and systems but maintaining their possession-based style independent of the opponent. He has already beaten Guardiola, Klopp, Mourinho and Pochettino which has been insanely impressive considering the budget Potter has had at his disposal. Lopetegui is probably best suited to a Leicester City sized role, taking a top half club and breaking into the top 6. His tiki taka style is a lot slower than what is required at Manchester United, with his teams focusing on ball possession in a 4-3-3 with a half back, rather than the progression that the Old Trafford faithful would demand. ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: http://bit.ly/SMDTwitch Luis Enrique is another man that’s been heavily linked. The current Spain boss is favours a vertical tiki taka style in a 4-3-3. His treble winning Barcelona is almost ignored because he followed Pep Guardiola but his side could be more entertaining than the Manchester City boss as he got the best out of one of the greatest attacking trios of all time: Messi, Suarez and Neymar. His Barcelona team was all about creating 1 v 1s for the world class forwards, often through diagonal switches of play, but his Spain side is a little bit different. His best players are his central midfielders but like a great coach, Enrique has adapted his system to get the most out of his stars. Enrique’s Spain use wide wingers and build with inverted full backs to give as much freedom to his central midfielders as possible. Mauricio Pochettino is another name constantly mentioned. His philosophy blends perfectly with that of Manchester United, playing high tempo, attacking football with academy graduates and youth development at the centre. He took Spurs from knocking on the door of the top 6 to the Champions League final in 5 seasons and based his team around a 4-2-3-1, using attacking full backs, a controlling midfielder paired with a ball carrier and a focal point striker. At PSG he’s used a 4-3-3 but his hands have been tied with a superstar front three of Messi, Mbappe and Neymar so he’s been forced to use a work-man-like midfield three to accommodate the lack of defensive work rate. He’s received criticism during his time in Paris but I wouldn't write Poch off. We saw Thomas Tuchel slated for his work in Paris only for him to move to Chelsea and be heralded as one of the best managers in the world. And finally Erik ten Hag. A 4-2-3-1 man through and through, Ten Hag has used two variants of this shape. His 18-19 Champions League semi-finalists were more of a 4-2-1-3, that transitioned to a passing diamond filled 3-3-1-3. Meanwhile this season we’ve seen a traditional 4-2-3-1 with an evolution in his attacking structure to become a 3-2-2-3. His 4-2-3-1 is made up with a ball playing back four and goal keeper, with one central midfielder heavily involved in the build up, rotating positions within Ajax’s structure, whilst the other is more box to box that interchanges positions with the attacking players. Meanwhile, the wingers take up wide positions to stretch the pitch and create space centrally for the box to box and attacking midfielder to create from.
