Today I’m taking a detailed look at Who is Dusan Vlahovic, answering the question: why is he one of the most chased strikers in the world? ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: http://bit.ly/StatmanDaveYoutube Born in Belgrade, Serbia on the 28th January 2000, Dusan Vlahovic is a full Serbian international who plays for Fiorentina. Vlahovic began his career in Serbia, playing youth football in Belgrade, even spending a small stint at Red Star before he signed for Partizan Belgrade in 2014. After playing just over 500 minutes for Partizan, the centre forward signed a five year contract with Fiorentina in June 2017 that would only become active on his 18th birthday. In the opening game of the 19-20 season, Vlahovic scored his first goals for Fiorentina, putting two past Monza in the Italian Cup. But it was the 2020-21 season that Vlahovic announced himself, bagging 21 goals in 37 Serie A appearances, with 95% of them coming in the last 28 games of the season. Standing at 6 foot 3, he’s an imposing striker but he’s also very technical. Vlahovic is a modern target man. He combines the physicality of the classic role with the technical ability like his first touch, close control and distribution with that of a midfielder and as you’d expect, he’s a top quality finisher.He loves acting as the focal point of his side’s attack and has actually received more progressive passes in Serie A this season than anyone else. Once in possession he uses the ball well, often holding off pressure whilst his teammates arrive before passing the ball on. Meanwhile, his favourite move is to receive, shrug off pressure and pass into space for the wide men. In the final third, Vlahovic continues to look for the ball to feet to help his team progress but in terms of shooting, he prefers to shoot from inside the box. In fact more than 70% of his shots in the league this season have come from inside the 18 yard box and all but one of his Serie A goals have come from outside the box from open play. Vlahovic isn’t quite the finished article. For such a big striker, he needs to improve his aerial threat with just 4 headed goals from 51 attempts in his career, although half of them have come this season so he’s going in the right direction. But with a determined and ambitious personality, a powerful physical frame and a very well rounded set of technical skills, Vlahovic will continue to score goals for a long time. The striker has been linked to a whole host of top European clubs and has expressed a desire to play in the Champions League and be coached by a top tier manager. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid & PSG tick all of Vlahovic’s boxes but in terms of the Premier League, neither Liverpool, Chelsea & Manchester City require a new striker. But if they’re serious about returning to the top of English football, Arsenal need to convince the Serbian to join regardless of Champions League football. His hold up play and ability to involve teammates would be perfect for Arteta’s vertical style of play and with Lacezette and Aubameyang’s contracts running out, the Gunners need a long-term number 9.
