'Over The Edge' (1979) is a drama film directed by Jonathan Kaplan. The story was inspired by the recurring news of violent youth gangs. The cast includes Michael Eric Kramer, Pamela Ludwig, Vincent Spano, Harry Northup and Matt Dillon making his feature film debut. Another interesting tidbit that I picked up about this movie concerns Kurt Cobain. Apparently this film was one of this favourites; it was also the inspiration for the song 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Cobain's legendary band Nirvana. The film centers around a planned-community called New Grenada. The designers didn't exactly plan on teenagers living in their town. The result is a group of dreadfully bored teens. In order to escape the blandness of their existence the kids turn to drugs, sex and violence. The police, despite their best efforts, aren't prepared to handle the young crowd. The song I used for this video is called 'Rebellion (Lies)' by Arcade Fire. To me the sound and concept of this piece of music captured the spirit of the film perfectly. 'Over The Edge' belongs to Orion Pictures. 'Rebellion (Lies)' belongs to Arcade Fire.
