In this short video, we will showcase the Mysore to Wayanad driving experience and the places around Vythiri & Lakkidi. Let's explore Lakkidi viewpoint, Chain tree, Thamarassery Ghat and Kakanakote Forest together. Mysore to Wayanad: After visiting Kabini Dam and Backwaters, we headed towards Vythiri of Waynad district in Kerala. We took the below route to reach Vythiri Kabini Backwaters - Kakanakote - Bavali - Kattikkulam - Kalpetta - Vythiri Infinitely straight stretch of Rajiv Gandhi National Park is a bss to driving enthusiast and nature lovers. Kakanakote Forest: Kakanakote forest used to be hunting grounds for the Royal families and British officers in the pre-independence era. This forest was very much famous for the 'Khedda', a method in which a large herd of elephants was captured by surrounding the herd with an enclosure of about 20-50 yards in diameter and 12 feet in height. The Wildlife Protection Act (1972) outlawed the hunting of wild animals. Today, the Kakanakote forest comes under the Rajiv Gandhi National Park and abounds with wildlife. Reaching Vythiri: Vythiri is 95 km from Kabini backwaters, and it takes around 3 hrs of driving to reach. The Woodlands is a decent vegetarian food option in Kalpetta on the way. Chain Tree: Chain tree gets its name from the ghost of a local tribesman named Karinthandan, whose soul is said to be captured and tied to this tree using a chain. Karinthandan was said to be killed by a British officer for selfish motives during the 18th century. Since then numerous road accidents in the nearby ghat pass under mysterious circumstances are linked to the ghost of Karinthandan. Over the years, as the tree has naturally grown tall, it said that the chain too has grown taller along with the tree mysteriously. Thamarassery Ghat Pass & Lakkidi Viewpoint: Lakkidi is often referred to as the ‘Gateway of Wayanad’. It is about 2296 ft (700 m) above the sea level. There are 9 hairpin curves from Lakkidi to downhill through steep mountains. Lakkidi viewpoint offers beautiful views of the surrounding cliffs and valleys and the sneaking Ghat road known as the 'Thamarassery Ghat ' that connects Wayanad with Calicut.
