The Rottweiler was originally bred in the town of Wurttemberg in Germany and is believed to be descended from the Italian Mastiff. The Rottweiler was widely used as a working dog in the Middle Ages and was used as a guard dog, a police dog, a herder and a messenger dog. Bred in Germany in the 1st century, Rottweilers are descended from German Shepherds crossed with the drover dogs and Mastiffs brought there by Roman soldiers. They were used for herding and guarding cattle, and later for pulling carts and wagons. The Rottweiler is a breed of domestic dog, regarded as medium-to-large or large. The dogs were known in German as Rottweiler Metzgerhund, meaning Rottweil butchers' dogs, because their main use was to herd livestock and pull carts laden with butchered meat to market.
