We know that musician Robert Johnson spent a lot of time on the road… but did you know that he had a family that he was close to, and would often visit and stay with for differing amounts of time? Some folks love to describe Robert as a mysterious man who lived only on the road, but he had a family he was close to, and would often stay with in Memphis, TN. He was especially close with his stepsister, Carrie Thompson…but also, his stepfather Charles Dodds-Spencer, and his family. Charles Dodds-Spencer and his family lived in this house for most of the 1930’s. Robert was already traveling and playing music when they moved into this home, but it’s the home he would always come back to when he wanted to see and spend time with family. One person who lived in this house was Mrs. Annye C. Anderson, the author of the book, “Brother Robert: Growing Up With Robert Johnson”. She was young at the time, but she seems to remember well her time living in this house, and the times Robert Johnson would be staying with them. Mrs. Anderson talks about this home in her book, and I wanted to see it for myself before time takes too much of a toll on the building, and it is no more.
