@Historic Blockade of Loretta Lynch: Dr. Lavonia Allison Remarks
Washington, DC, March 17, 2015 — The North Carolina NAACP organized a 5-hour bus ride to the Nation's Capitol to allow 30 women to ask their Senators why they were voting against a native daughter of North Carolina, Loretta Lynch for Attorney General of the United States. Participants said after the meeting they had been treated rudely, and spoke with particular indignation about the treatment of the African American women present. NAACP Press release: Diverse Coalition of Women From Across NC to Travel to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to Persuade Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis to Confirm NC Native and U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch as First Ever Female African American U.S. Attorney General DURHAM, NC: A diverse coalition of women from across North Carolina will take a chartered bus to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to meet with their senators, Richard Burr and Thom Tillis. The purpose of the trip is to persuade Senators Tillis and Burr to vote to confirm Loretta Lynch, U.S. Attorney for New York's Eastern District, to be the next U.S. Attorney General. Burr and Tillis have indicated they will vote against the historic nomination of Lynch, even though she is a highly qualified prosecutor, and a native of North Carolina. The delegation will be joined by NC NAACP President Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II in Washington, D.C. They will meet with Senator Burr in his office at 1:30 p.m. Senator Tillis has not responded to the NC NAACP's request for a meeting with him, at the time of writing. Many of the women in the delegation have taken part in the Moral Monday protests at the North Carolina General Assembly led by Rev. Dr. Barber and a multi-racial coalition of advocates for civil rights, LGBTQ rights, labor rights, environmental rights, women's rights, with a strong moral essence to the protests, led by clergy from every major faith. "We have learned a great deal from exercising our rights to petition the government for redress of grievances in North Carolina," Rev. Dr. Barber said. "Senator Tillis has brought the same set of politics he practiced in North Carolina to the U.S. Senate, so we decided we would petition him at the office in the U.S. Senate with our grievances. His treatment of our sister has been shameful." The delegation of North Carolina women will leave from the NC NAACP office (114 W. Parrish St.) in Durham at 4 a.m. They will hold a news conference in the Zenger Room at the National Press Club at 11:30 a.m. before meeting with Senator Burr at 1:30 p.m. in his office.
