TRANSCRIPT: Asia Pacific: Mongolia & Vietnam On May 4th, Students For Liberty hosted an event in Vietnam for the first time, teaming up with both F-Group Vietnam and the Market Solutions Research Center for Economic and Social Issues. This seminar covered topics such as economic growth and macroeconomics from a libertarian perspective,drawing in 30 students from across the country. One week later, SFL joined forces with the Silk Road Foundation to hold a seminar at the National University of Mongolia, covering topics including individualism, economic freedom and personal development. The event was a great success, with 33 students attending what was SFL’s first ever event in Mongolia. South Asia: Online SFL South Asia launched a webinar, ‘Islam and Liberty: Political, Economic and Social Manifestations,’ in cooperation with the Islam and Liberty Network. The speakers, including Islam and Liberty Network CEO, Ali Salman, and associate editor Tasnim Idriss, explored the topic of liberty in Islamic communities, particularly the market economy, the rule of law, and liberal Islamic values. The webinar drew in over 180 registrations and received 778 views on Facebook. Its main aim was to dispel popular misconceptions about Islam and freedom as well as put forward a Muslim case for liberty. Europe: Iceland, Turkey, & Germany On September 6th, SFL Iceland held a conference called ‘Freedom and Future,’ with guest speakers including Daniel Hannan,David Oddson and Andrew Heaton. The annual event was attended by 112 people and has become one of the most significant pro-liberty events in Iceland. Two SFL leaders in Turkey, Özgür Özer and Orçun Koçak, have founded a new think tank: the Future Technologies Association. This organization aims to increase public awareness around emerging technologies, with a focus on individual rights, inclusiveness, liberty and prosperity. On September 22nd, the CEO and co-founder of Whole Foods, John Mackey, spoke at the Prometheus Institute in Berlin, Germany, at a conference organized by SFL Germany where he addressed the importance of practicing conscious capitalism by creating value for all stakeholders. North America: Provo, Utah, USA. Our leader at Utah Valley University, Justin Anderson, ran for local office and got elected in Utah County. He's launched a mobile app that utilizes blockchain technology to allow overseas voters to participate in their local elections. Utah County is now the first municipality in the US to make effective use of both blockchain technology and ranked choice voting in its elections. Africa: Nairobi, Kenya. In August 2019, African SFL co-hosted the annual Africa Liberty Forum in Nairobi, Kenya.Attendees discussed free-market reforms, human rights and its relationship to the rule of law, free press, property rights, government accountability, and how to fight corruption. At the Awards Dinner, the Atlas Network honored ASFL as a 2019 Africa Liberty Award finalist for its “2018 Principles of Free Markets Colloquial,” a two-week academic engagement discouraging Boko Haram’s violent extremism and promoting economic freedom in Nigeria’s northeast. On September 27th, ASFL hosted the 2019 Francophone Africa Regional Conference, which is the first among their conference lineups for 2019. The event was held at the French Institute, Bujumbura in Burundi with 307 attendees. Latin America: Monterrey, Mexico & Buenos Aires, Argentina On September 3rd, EsLibertad organized a talk in Monterrey, Mexico, on the subject of the country’s changing cannabis laws. Adolfo Urquizo, coordinator for the Andean Region, interviewed María Marty, CEO of the Ayn Rand Center Latin America, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This interview was part of the "Emprender EsLibertad" series, and reached over 1,500 people on Facebook. Brazil: Rio de Janeiro SFL volunteers drew attention during the Flamengo vs. Emelec match in the Copa Libertadores, in Rio de Janeiro, by holding up letters to address the need to privatize the stadium. Their display had a potential reach of almost 67 million people! In August, SFL Brazil’s 547 coordinators organized 34 events, gave 20 lectures, and published 59 texts on Medium and Resenha Para Mim, a liberal book review platform created by one of SFL Brazil’s coordinators.
