Please accept the Suicide: The Ripple Effect CHALLENGE to raise awareness of a major health crisis that takes more than 40,000 American every year. One American dies by suicide every 13 minutes and the global suicide rates are staggering as well. In the ALS ice bucket challenge people were asked to make a video of them having ice cold water dumped on their head. For the Suicide: The Ripple Effect Challenge we are NOT asking you to pour water on yourself, we are asking you pour /share your personal experience on the topic of suicide to shine light on this issue and bring more awareness and understanding to your friends and the world. So please take this challenge and be a part of this lived experience revolution! Here is how it works: RECORD: Make a short video (no longer than 2 minutes) of yourself telling how you, a loved one and/or your community have been impacted by suicide. Be creative - poems, songs and other artistic expressions are welcomed. At the end of your video challenge at least 3 people to also take the challenge. If you use a camera phone please turn it sideways. Some things to consider including in your video: ● How a death by suicide or a suicide attempt by someone you know has impacted your life. ● Your own personal experience with attempting or contemplating suicide. ● Positive work that is being done by you, friends, organizations or communities related to suicide prevention. ● Please include positives that have come out of your experience. Such as how your experience has helped others and/or motivated you to want to help others. Please use positive stigma free language such as "died by suicide" rather than "committed suicide". Also please refrain from talking about specific methods used to complete suicide in your video. UPLOAD and POST: Upload your video to youtube, Vimeo or directly to Facebook. Post the link on our FB page facebook.com/suicidetherippleeffect and also on your own timeline and tag the people you challenged in the video and other friends. Also please share on other social media sites. DONATE: Make a monetary donation to support Suicide: The Ripple Effect film and movement and 25% of your contribution will go to support suicide prevention organizations and initiatives, And/or donate directly to a local or national suicide prevention organization. And/or donate your time and volunteer in your community to help support suicide prevention. (Please see our website for some of the many organizations you can support) You do not have to donate to participate in the challenge because by participating in this challenge you will be doing a lot to raise awareness and help prevent suicides. However making a contribution will further help propel the suicide prevention MOVEMENT. So participating and donating is ideal. By posting your video to our FB page or tagging us in it you are giving Suicide: The Ripple Effect permission to share your video as part of this awareness campaign and movement.
