Sutherland Shire Council's video: International Day of Sign Languages

@International Day of Sign Languages
Today, 23 September, is the International Day of Sign Languages. Sutherland Shire local Sharon Xabregas from Signhear shared some Auslan with us, including Council’s CARE values: Collaborate, Achieve, Respect, Evolve The International Day of Sign Languages is a day to raise awareness of the importance of sign language and the human rights of people who are deaf. According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are approximately 72 million deaf people worldwide. Deaf people around the world use more than 300 different sign languages. In 2015, around 20,000 people in Australia used Auslan to communicate every day. As Sharon says: “Deaf people love Auslan. It’s a huge part of who we are. We hope that you also celebrate International Day of Sign Languages with us.”
