And it sounds like a great idea to get 2! Your puppy will have a playmate, right? Well, not so fast. You need to know about Littermate Syndrome first. Here’s what often happens: When 2 puppies are taken in and raised in the same home, one puppy usually becomes very introverted, even if that puppy was originally outgoing. She will fail to imprint on her human family and will struggle to interact with other humans and dogs. And this is also true of 2 puppies who aren't from the same litter, but are again raised in the same home at the same time. And even the bolder of the two puppies will struggle with being nervous and anxious. The two puppies become co-dependent on each other and exhibit severe separation anxiety when apart. So this is what ideally will happen with having just 1 puppy at a time. The puppy will develop with her new family. She will mature into a healthy, distinct individual. A new puppy learns to fit in with her new pack, and I mean both humans and, if there are any, the other older dogs in the family. There’s a kind of social structure already established in both human and dog families, and she will find her place.
