Chihuahua people have pretty definite feelings about coat length. They either love the long coat Chihuahuas or they love the short coat. One of the factors I hear regarding this issue is that long coat Chihuahuas require more work due to shedding and grooming. First of all, many of the grooming issues are the same, whether your Chihuahua has long coat or short coat. All Chihuahuas need to be bathed at least once every 6-8 weeks or as needed if they get dirty. Chihuahuas are mostly indoor dogs and they don’t tend to get too dirty unless they’re playing with something messy. In fact, the ASPCA recommends bathing your long hair Chihuahua at least once every 3 months. Chihuahuas need very little hair trimming. A long coat chihuahua will need trimming around the toes and the pads of the feet. Another problem area is with cling ons. Long coat sweetie pies tend to have more issues with this and so a quick and neat sanitary clip will take care of it. A long coat usually requires a bit more brushing to help lift and remove dead hair and clean up dander from the undercoat. You will notice more hair loss during seasonal coat change which is twice a year. Brushing will also help cut down on possible allergies. The loose hair carries the dander and saliva which cause allergies. Brushing out that loose fur will keep it off your clothes and furniture which will help. By the way, both long hair and short hair Chihuahuas carry allergens and are not hypoallergenic. Even bald dogs carry dander and saliva. However, in my experience a Chihuahua carries less allergens than a larger breed simply because there’s less dog, less volume, less surface area! I call that a win for our sweetie pies! So in the end, yes, a long coat Chihuahua might be a little more work, but if properly groomed, the coats can be long, flowing, and luxurious. ------------------------------- 👚🧢👙👜📲 Check out my Merch store!
