The story of Richards’ mother Josephine, was kept a family secret until his brother revealed it to him six months before his death in 200I. Richard had no idea about her life from 1892 to 1930, the year he was born, and knew nothing about his real father. His Jewish heritage remained a secret for decades. Franz Xaver, who he knew as his father, accepted him as his son and protected him from the Nazis who hated the Jews and had planned to exterminate them once they were in power. Josephine’s life began in 1892, and much of her story is told against the historical background of the early 20th century in Munich.
