@Q&A with Mandy Patinkin | TIFF Stay-at-Home Cinema | TIFF 2020
The magic of filmgoing together, at home. TIFF Stay-at-Home Cinema hosted a virtual Q&A with Mandy Patinkin and Cameron Bailey on Friday, March 27, on Instagram Live (@tiff_net), before a screening of TIFF’s 1987 People’s Choice Award winner, THE PRINCESS BRIDE. We want to share the magic of filmgoing together while we watch from home. With this in mind, TIFF has curated a series from Crave’s extensive selection of titles, accompanied by conversations with special guests via Instagram. Learn more on http://TIFF.net/stayathome. Both a send-up of and a salute to the classic storybook adventure tale, Rob Reiner’s beloved cult favourite, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, mixes together all the essential fairy-tale elements and gives them a slyly satirical twist. Framed by a present-day narrative in which a crusty grandfather (Peter Falk) reads a story to his bedridden and skeptical grandson (Fred Savage), THE PRINCESS BRIDE relates the tale of Buttercup (Robin Wright) and Westley (Cary Elwes), young lovers whose eventful path to happily ever after leads them through adventures involving pirates, an evil prince (Chris Sarandon) and his vicious enforcer (Christopher Guest), a friendly giant (André the Giant), a flamboyant Spanish swordsman seeking revenge (Mandy Patinkin), rodents of unusual size, a pair of decrepit miracle workers (Billy Crystal and Carol Kane), and much else besides. Immensely quotable, deeply silly and also touchingly sincere, THE PRINCESS BRIDE is “filled with good-hearted fun, with performances by actors who seem to be smacking their lips, and [with] a certain true innocence that survives all of Reiner's satire” (Roger Ebert).
