Tensions between the United States and China over Taiwan have spiked again following Beijing’s refusal to rule out the use of force to unify with the self-ruled island nation. Xi’s statement comes after President Joe Biden’s back and forth over US’ commitment to the ‘One China Policy’. Although US’ official policy does not commit to military action in Taiwan, Biden has seemingly gone against it by repeatedly stating that US would defend Taiwan ‘militarily’ in case of Chinese invasion. Tensions particularly rose dramatically in Taiwan in August 2022 after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei. While China responded to Pelosi’s visit by staging war games near Taiwan, the US framed a bill that, if passed, would see Washington significantly enhancing military support to Taipei.
