Should Sha'Carri Richardson be Allowed to Run?? HELL YES!! @Christine_Sclafani explores the question, "Should Athletes be able to smoke weed?" Sha’carri Richardson clocked an incredible 10.86 seconds during the women’ s 100-meter dash, making her mark as one of the 6 fastest women in the country. You should all know by now, the 100-meter sprinter was suspended by The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for marijuana use, disqualifying her from the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. How is it, that a gifted Olympic-level athlete could have her dreams demolished because she consumed a PLANT that is from the EARTH and legal throughout most of the country? Turns out Richardson had consumed cannabis in an effort to cope with the unexpected death of her biological mother while she was in Oregon for the Olympic trials. Shacarri, my deepest deepest condolences for your loss……. Don’t get me wrong - I did the same thing when my mom passed away, but I would NOT consume marijuana if I was competing in the Olympics!!!!! They can still use the drug if they so choose, it just cannot be during their competitive season. This literally broke my heart when I heard this news!! Even though I think the whole thing is still ludicrous – This is a controversial subject matter that needs to be re-evaluated and changed! Cannabis has been on the World Anti-Doping Associations list since 2004. A substance is banned by the association if it meets two out of three criteria: 1. "potential to enhance or does enhances sport performance"; 2. "actual or potential risk to health" 3. "against the spirit of sport.” In 2011, WADA published a paper in Sports Medicine explaining why marijuana fit all three criteria. Listen to this, as a performance enhancer – they said the substance "reduces anxiety, allowing athletes to better perform under pressure." For risk to health, they said marijuana causes "slower reaction times and poor executive function or decision making." And as a sign of it being against the spirit of sport the paper said it's "not consistent with the athlete as a role model for young people around the world." I think it’s time the World Anti-Doping Association updates its list of “Prohibited Substance List”. Since Sha’carri was suspended and taken off this years’ Olympic games, a lot of people have been in an uproar over it! People watch the Olympics for the ATHLETES – not the ads. So many people aren’t tuning into watch because of this. I for one am going to wait to see the clips on youtube. Did anyone see @JoeRogan’s rant on this by any chance? If you haven’t, google it. I’m in agreement with him as well. Bottom line, there is no evidence (scientific or factual) for cannabis use as a performance-enhancing drug. I mean, I would think weed is detrimental to an endurance athlete???? Hmmmm, so dumb!! In my experience with Marijuana – the last thing I feel like doing when I’m HIGH is anything that requires a ton of energy, like RUNNING, FAST…..in a competition! I wanna crash on the couch NOT - win a Medal! Walking to the fridge is a mission when I’m high - pft! I certainly do not see it as a performance-enhancing drug. She still has the support from NIKE and she was also offered a spokesperson opportunity with DR.
