Thirunallaru :திருநள்ளாறில் சனீஸ்வரனை வழிபடும் முறை, வழிபட உகந்த நாள் Saneeswaran Temple is one of the Navagraha Temples, where the presiding deity is Lord Shiva but the temple is known for Lord Saneeswaran [Saturn] who is the doorkeeper here for Shiva. It is believed you can only see Lord Shiva after seeking bessing from Saneeswaran. Lord Shiva is in the form of Dharbaranyeswarar here. Long ago the place where the temple is situated was dense forest of Dharbha Grass, and thus Shiva is worshipped as Dharbaranyeswarar, and the temple got its other name Dharbaranyeswarar Temple. The idol of Lord Shiva here, depict him performing one of the seven dance forms of Shiva himself and therefor the temple is one of the “Saptha Vidanga Sthalams”. The lingam worshipped here is a Swayambhu Lingam, which means it is not man made, rather it is a self-manifested Lingam. Saneeswaran is the son of Chaya Devi and Lord Surya, and even a mere sight of him is said to be destructive. As per Hinduism, Saneeswaran is believed to have profound influence in one’s life. There is an interesting legend behind this temple which proves the effects of Saneeswaran, and it goes like this- King Nala who was a great ruler and was gifted with all the happiness in life Saturdays are always very crowded especially during the period July/August (Aadi month). If you want to visit the temple on a Saturday, go after 2 pm when it is less crowded. The temple is open from 5.30 am till 9 pm on all Saturdays (on other days, it opens by 6 am and closes by 1 pm.to open again at 4 pm and close at 9 pm) Suggest you take a Rs. 50/- per head ticket. On crowded days, tickets of Rs. 150 per head and Rs. 250 per head are also issued. During other days, the temple is not crowded, except during festivals and the school holiday season. There are restaurants around the temple serving south indian food. A visit to Tranquebar (Danish settlement) en route (about 10 km before Thirunallar) is worthwhile. There is a Danish fort which is looked after and some other historical spots. If you are going by road from Pondicherry / Chennai, stop at Chidambaram where the famous Nataraja Temple is. Its a fantastic temple with marvellous sculptures. Try and finish the Chidambaram visit before 10.30 am (or go after 4 pm) since the granite paving around the temple gets very hot and difficult to walk!! This town has reasonable hotels serving south indian food. Latest tamil news, Latest sports news, latest film reviews
