The Poet: Shakeel Badayuni شکیل بدایونی (takhallus: Shakeel) was born on 3 August 1916 in district Badayun بدایوں in Rohilkhand روہیل کھنڈ region of United Provinces (now in northwestern Uttar Pradesh), India. His father جمیل احمد سوختہ بدایونی Jamil Ahmad Sokhta Badayuni was a khatib and imam at a mosque in Bombay. Shakeel completed his early education in Arabic, Farsi, and Urdua from a madrassa. Then he graduated from Islamia High School Badayun. For higher education he joined the علی گڑھ مسلم یونیورسٹی Aligarh Muslim University in 1936. After completing his B.A., he started goverment service in Delhi in 1942. In Delhi he served for a few years. He had become close to Jigar Muradabadi during his stay at Aligarh. Jigar used to take him to Urdu mushairas and also introduced him to the Indian Film Indusrty in Bombay. He moved to Bombay in 1944 and started his career as a song writer for Indian movies. He wrote songs for scores of movies. His songs were very popular and he won many awards for best songs. He passed away on 20 April 1970. Five collections of his Urdu poetry were published during his lifetime. They include نغمہِ فردوس Naghma-e Firdos, صنم و حرم Sanam-o Haram, رعنائیاں Ra'naaiyaan, رنگینیاں Rangeeniyaan, and شبستان Shabistan. The Singer: Begum Akhtar بیگم اختر (her first name was Akhtari) was born in فیض آباد Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh (then United Provinces), India, in 1914. She is also known as اختری بائی فیض آبادی Akhtari Bai Faizabadi. Her mother مشتری Mushtari and father اصغر حسین Asghar Hussain separated when she was very young. Her twin sister زہرا Zohra died at the age of 4. She was raised by her mother. She got training in music from classical music teachers in Patna, Patiala, and Lahore. She finally became a student of استاد جھنڈے خان Ustad Jhande Khan. Her first public performance was at the age of fifteen. She also acted in a few movies. In 1945 she married a barrister, اشتیاق احمد عباسی Ishtiaq Ahmed Abbasi, and became known as Begum Akhtar. Soon differences appeared as her husband was against her singing. In 1949 she resumed her singing from Lucknow Radio Station. She soon turned to singing in concerts. She died on 7 October 1974 in احمد آباد Ahmedabad, where she had gone for a concert.
