Mirza Wajid Hussain مرزا واجد حسین was born in the Mughalpura مغلپورہ muhalla (section) محلّہ of Azimabad عظیم آباد , Bengal بنگال , British India, on 17 October 1884. Azimabad is today called Patna پٹنہ and is the capital of Bihar بہار state. It is believed that his ancestor, Mirza Hasan Ali Baig Chughtai مرزا حسن علی بیگ چغتائی had come to India from Iran, and had become associated with the Mughal court. Chughtais are a Turko-Mongol people who came to India mostly from Central Asia. The founder of the Mughal Empire, Zaheeruddin Babur (1483-1530) was also a Chughtai Turk. After getting his early education from a local madressah, Mirza Wajid Hussain, was enrolled at the Muhammedan Anglo-Arabic School in Azimabad. He was reportedly a very brilliant student. He started composing Urdu poetry in Azimabad in his teen years. In 1903, he passed the entrance examination of the Calcutta University, but could not continue his education. He moved to Calcutta in 1904 and started his career as a tutor of English. He returned to Azimabad after a few years. Initially he started using the takhallus “Yaas” (meaning “despair”) یاس , and was known as “Yaas Azimabadi” یاس عظیم آبادی . After staying in Azimabad for a few years, he moved to Lucknow. There he got married in 1913. He was initially well-received by both the public and the literary circles. There he switched to the takhallus “Yagana” (meaning unique) یگانہ and was known as Yagana Lakhnawi یگانہ لکھنوی . Soon many controversies started around him. A group of poets who had very high regard of Mirza Ghlib مرزا غالب started criticizing Yagana. In 1924 he moved to Etawah اٹاوہ (currently in UP), and started working as a teacher at Islamia High School, Etawah. In 1925 he worked at a press in Aligarh علیگڑھ . In 1926 he moved to Lahore لاہور and was hired by Maulana Tajwar Najibabadi مولانا تاجور نجیب آبادی for editorial work. In Lahore he developed acquaintance with Allama Iqbal علّامہ اقبال . Around 1928, he moved to Hyderabad State. His financial condition improved there as he got a regular job in the registration department. He got retirement from the job in 1942. By 1932, he had been calling himself Yagana Changezi یگانہ چنگیزی , perhaps as a reaction to the way he was treated by the people. Reportedly, he even dedicated one of his books to Changez Khan. He passed away in Lucknow on 2 February 1956 after a long illness. Yagana's first collection of poetry “Nashtar-e Yaas” نشترِ یاس was published in 1914 at Lucknow. By then he was projecting himself as a follower of Khuwaja Haidar Ali Aatish (1778-1848) خواجہ حیدر علی آتش and in Nishtar-e Yaas he wrote Khaak-e Paa-e Aatish خاکِ پائے آتش before his name on the title. In 1919 he established “Anjuman-e Khaasaan-e Adab” انجمنِ خاصانِ ادب . In 1923 he published his polemic against Aziz Lakhnawi (Mirza Muhammad Hadi 1882-1935 مرزا محمد ہادی) from Lucknow titled “Shuhrat-e Kaaziba” شہرتِ کاذبہ . “Aaayat-e Wijdani” آیاتِ وجدانی was published in 1927 at Lahore, followed by “Tarana” ترانہ in 1934 at Lahore, and “Ganjina” گنجینہ in 1948، also at Lahore. He was very critical of Ghalib in his publication Ghalib Shikan غالب شکن, published in 1934 at Hyderabad. In it he took upon himself to point out flaws in Ghalib's poetry. This was basically a letter in response to an objection raised against Yagana at a literary meeting in which he had participated. It was not liked by people and it did not help his reputation. But then he had a second edition published in 1935 as “Ghalib Shikan Do Atisha” غالب شکن دو آتشہ and criticized Ghalib more intensely. He argued that people unduly praised Ghalib and called the people who adored Ghalib “Ghalibchees” غالبچی. Later in his life he started more controversies by saying contentious things about religion. In 1953 he sent some lines to a religious scholar, which created so much controversy that he was publicly humiliated. Tariq Akbar 10 October 2014
