Mirza Jamiluddin Ahmed Khan مرزا جمیل الدّین احمد خان was born on 20 January 1926 in Delhi دہلی, British India. His father, Nawab Ameeruddin Ahmed Khan (1859-1937) نواب امیر الدّین احمد خان, was the Nawab of the princely state of Loharu لوہارو (near Delhi) between 1884 and 1920. He was also appointed to the Viceroy of India's Legislative Council. Loharu is currently in district Bhiwani بھوانی in Haryana ہریانہ, India, near the border of Rajasthan راجھستان. It is believed that the ancestors of the rulers of Loharu were ethnic Turks who came to India from Turkistan. Aali's grandfather, Alauddin Ahmed Khan علاوالدّین احمد خان, was a friend and student of Mirza Ghalib مرزا غالب. He had become the ruling nawab of Loharu in 1869. The haveli of the Nawab of Loharu was on Gali Qasim Jan گلی قاسم جان, in the mohalla Ballimaran محلّہ بلّی ماراں, very close to the house where Ghalib lived. Ghalib's wife Umrao Begum امراؤ بیگم was the daughter of Nawab Ilahi Bakhsh Khan نواب الٰہی بخش خان, who was the younger brother of the first nawab of Loharu, Nawab Ahmad Bakhsh Khan نواب احمد بخش خان . It has been reported that Aali's mother, Sayyeda Jamila Begum سیّدہ جمیلہ بیگم was a descendant of Khuwaja Mir Dard خواجہ میر درد, the eighteenth century poet who is considered one of the masters of the classical Urdu ghazal اردو غزل. Aali earned his bachelor's in Economics from the Anglo Arabic College, Delhi. After the partition of India in 1947, he moved along with his family to Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. He joined the CSP (Civil Services of Pakistan) in 1951. In 1971 he earned his LLB degree. He was for some time involved in politics. His collections of Urdu poetry include: aye mere dasht-e sukhan اے میرے دشتِ سخن, ghazlain dohey get غزلیں دوہے گیت, jeewey jeewey Pakistan جیوے جیوے پاکستان, la haasil لاحاصل, nai kiran نئی کرن, and dohey دوہے. His works in prose include dunya mere aage دنیا میرے آگے, tamasha mere aage تماشہ میرے آگے, Iceland آئس لینڈ, and harfey chand حرفے چند. He has written some of the most popular patriotic songs for Pakistan, including aey watan ke sajeeley jawanon اے وطن کے سجیلے جوانو, jeewey jeewey Pakistan جیوے جیوے پاکستان, and ham Mustafawi hain ہم مصطفوی ہیں. He has been given several awards for his services to Urdu literature including Hilal-e Imtiaz ہلالِ امتیاز, the Pride of Performance Medal تمغہِ حسنِ کارکردگی, Adamjee Literary Award, and Dawood Literary Award, and others. He has also served a term as a Senator in the Upper House of the Parliament of Pakistan. He is best known for his dohey دوہے , a form of Urdu poetry. Those of us who have heard him, one can never forget the sweet sadness of his deep voice.
