The Poet: Muhammad Hayat Khan محمّد حیات خان, commonly known as Maulana Kausar Niazi مولانا کوثر نیازی (takhallus: Kausar کوثرؔ), was born in Musakhel موسیٰ خیل, District Mianwali ضلع میانوالی, Punjab پنجاب, British India, in 1934. His father, Fateh Khan Niazi فتح خان نیازی, belonged to the Niazi نیازی ethnic group/tribe, a Pashtun group which forms the largest ethnic group of Mianwali District. He statrted his political career in Jamaat-e Islami جماعتِ اسلامی. He was arrested and jailed in 1953 in Lahore for his part in the Tahreek-e Tahaffuz-e Khatm-e Nabuvvat تحریکِ تحفّظِ ختمِ نبوّت (Movement for the Protection of the Finality of the Prophethoot). He later joined Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's ذوالفقار علی بھٹّو Pakistan People's Party. In the 1970 elections he won the National Assembly seat from Sialkot سیالکوٹ for the PPP with a huge margin. He served as the Federal Minister of Religious and Minority Affairs in Z.A. Bhutto's cabinet from 1973 to 1976. In 1977 he was appointed as the Federal Information Minister. After General Zia-ul Haq ضیا الحق removed the PPP from power in 1977, he developed some differences with the PPP leadership. Benazir Bhutto بینظیر بھٹّو made him the Chairman of the Islamic Ideology Council اسلامی نظریاتی کونسل in 1993. He passd away in 1994. He was a reasonably good poet and made frequent appearances on the PTV (Pakistan Television) mushairas مشاعرے. He is best known for his naatia ashaar نعتیہ اشعار (verses in praise of the Prophet, mpbuh). He is buried in Islamabad اسلام آباد with his following na'tia she'r نعتیہ شعر on his gravestone: کوثرؔ کے دل میں ایک ہی اعزاز کی ہوس کہہ دیں وہؐ حشر میں ، یہ ہمارا غلام ہے The Singer: Ustad Amanat Ali Khan (b: 1922: Hoshiarpur, d: 1974: Lahore) طارق اکبر Tariq Akbar 13 February 2015
