Syed Iftikhar Hussain Rizvi سیّد افتخار حسین رضوی (commonly known as Muztar Khairabadi مضطرؔ خیر آبادی) was born in c. 1865 in Khairabad خیر آباد , District Sitapur سیتا پور , in the State of Avadh اوودھ . Today Sitapur is a district in the Lucknow لکھنئو division of the state of Uttar Pradesh اتر پردیش . Only about five years before his birth, the British had mercilessly crushed the attempt of Indians to gain independence. The freedom fighters in Avadh kept the sporadic guerrilla campaign until the spring of 1859. Avadh was then joined with Delhi and Agra by the British to form a new province called the “North Western Provinces and Oudh”. Iftikhar Rizvi's mother, Sayyeda-tun Nisa Hirman Khairabadi سیدۃ النّسا حرمان خیر آبادی , was the daughter of the highly respected freedom-fighter, Allama Fazl-e Haq Khairabadi علّامہ فضلِ حق خیر آبادی , and a poet herself. Allama Fazl-e Haq Khaiabadi was the Chief Justice (Qadi-ul Quda قاضی القضاۃ ) of Lucknow and he gave a fatwa of Jihad جہاد to fight the British colonialists. In his historic fatwa for jihad, he reportedly wrote that “the English prepared a scheme to Christianize all the Indian inhabitants. It was their belief that the Indians would not be able to find any helper and cooperator, and therefore save submit and obey, they would not have the nerve to defy them ... they began to indulge in all sorts of wiles and chicanery with complete diligence and assiduity, in their willful attempt to obliterate religion and the sense of nationhood. To teach small children and the ignorant and to inculcate their language and religion, they established schools in towns and villages and made an all out effort to wipe out the old sciences and academic attainments”. In the final stages of the Avadh resistance, believing himself covered by an amnesty, he surrendered himself to the British authorities on 30 January 1859 at Khairabad. He was tried by the British and banished to Andaman and Nicobar (“Kalapani” کالا پانی) Islands (between Burma and Indonesia). He reached Andaman on 8 October 1859. He passed away in Andaman in 1861, about a year before Iftikhar Rizvi's birth. It has not become clear to me so far whether he was hanged or died a natural death. Even if it was a natural death, it should be considered as a result of inhuman conditions of captivity and so he should be considered a martyr (shaheed شہید ) of the failed War of Independence of 1857. Iftikhar Hussain Rizvi's paternal grandfather, Tafazzul Hussain تفضّل حسین , was an ambassador of the State of Tonk ٹانک , and he had introduced Mirza Ghalib مرزا غالب to Nawab Wazir-ud Daula نوّاب وزیر الدّولہ of Tonk. His father was Hafiz Ahmed Hassan (takhallus: Ruswa) حافظ احمد حسن رسواؔ . Muztar Khaiabadi served for some time as a judge in the states of Tonk and Gwalior. In Gwalior he gave a decision in favor of a person unjustly accused which displeased the Maharaja, so he had to flee the state to Bhopal بھوپال . He aslo served for some time as the Nawab of Rampur's رامپور tutor. He passed away in Gwalior گوالیار in 1927, where he must have settled ultimately. He is buried there. His collections of Urdu poetry include Nazr-e Khuda نذرِ خدا , Neyaz-e Mustafa نیازِ مصطفیٰؐ , Meelad-e Mustafa میلادِ مصطفیٰؐ , and Ilhamaat الہامات . He also published a magazine entitled Karishma-e Dilbar کرشمہِ دلبر . The Urdu poet Jan Nisar Akhtar (1914-1976) جاں نثار اختر was his son. The contemporary popular poet and lyricist Jawed Akhtar جاوید اختر is Jan Nisar Akhtar's son. The lines uploaded here have been mistakenly attributed to Bahadur Shah Zafar.
