The Poet: Muhammad Shaukat Ali Khan محمد شوکت علی خان (commonly known as Fani Badayuni فانی بدایونی , takhallus Fani فانی ) was born in Islamnagar اسلام نگر , Badayun بدایوں , Rohilkhand روہیل کھنڈ region, Uttar Pradesh اتر پردیش (UP), India, in 1879. Badayun was then in the United Provinces under the colonial British India. He got his early education from a local madressah. He studied Farsi and Arabic for about 13 years. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree from Bareilly College, Bareilly بریلی , UP, in 1901. Then for a few years he was busy writing poetry. He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) Degree from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh علیگڑھ , UP, India, in 1906. He practiced Law for a while in Bareilly and Lucknow لکھنؤ , but later on moved to Hyderabad Deccan حیدر آباد دکن . He was appointed in the Department of Education of Nizam of Hyderabads نظام حیدرآباد Government. He had completed his Divan at the age of 20. His first Divan was published in 1917 from Badayun. His second collection of poetry was completed in 1906, but it was lost. The following decade was a period of great difficulties for Fani. He did not write much poetry in that period. His second Divan was published in 1926 as Baaqiyaat-e Fani باقیات ـ فانی . He has a unique style in Urdu ghazal. He uses a simple language even while discussing a most complex reality, and his ghazal is known for the highest degree of taghazzal تغزل . It is hard to find more melancholic and touching Urdu ashaar اشعار than some of his. Fani also translated works of Milton and Shakespeare into Urdu. He passed away in Hyderabad Deccan in 1941.
