Current Affairs for UPSC CSE's video: 5 Must Read Dystopian and Post Apocalyptic Novels

@5 Must Read Dystopian and Post Apocalyptic Novels
Buy these on amazon 1. The Handmaid's Tale -- Margaret Atwood - https://amzn.to/2CTQhaA 2. Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde - https://amzn.to/2EFTwUq 3. Oryx and Crake -- Margaret Atwood - https://amzn.to/2pWXVIK 4. Nightfall by Isaac Asimov -- https://amzn.to/2pXsHRH 5. A Canticle For Leibowitz- Walter M Miller Jr - https://amzn.to/2S25Cu2 1. The House of the Scorpion -- by Nancy Farmer About a future where a strip of land between Mexico and the US, named Opium, become one of the richest countries in the world via opiate production from the poppy flowers. 2. Nightfall by Isaac Asimov -- https://amzn.to/2pXsHRH A world used to eternal sunshine experiences darkness for the first time. It blew my mind. 3. Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde https://amzn.to/2EFTwUq Set a very long time after a cataclysmic event, society is now structured around and autocratic government and a caste system where your caste is determined by what color you can see. People can generally see on color and colors are ranked in order of prestige. This book is funny and also dark in the end. This book cleverly mocks the often quite arbitrary bases of human social status. 4. A Canticle For Leibowitz- Walter M Miller Jr (link) In a post apocalyptic world, there is very little surviving information about the 'old' world. A group of monks work to preserve whatever information they can find, but without understanding what any of it really means. 5. The Sheep Look Up -- John Brunner https://amzn.to/2CkzbRZ Its about pollution, corrupt industries, government not doing what is best for the people, and the average person just trying to get through life. The story is categorized as science fiction, and it probably was when it was written, but it's closer to reality now. 6. The Handmaid's Tale -- Margaret Atwood (link) This book is a tale of terror as well as a warning. The dystopian future she describes in "Gilead" which appears to be centered in Boston is chillingly misogynistic where women are reduced to strict categories. It is certainly the most explicitly misogynistic dystopian book I have ever read. It is thought provoking cover to cover. 7. Oryx and Crake -- Margaret Atwood https://amzn.to/2pWXVIK Its about a future shaped by altering genetics and modifying food/drugs. Its eerily close to the world we live in right now, and seems, at times, incredibly possible.
