India's vast coastline of roughly 7500 kilometers, opening to Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea makes India very vulnerable to tropical cyclones; Both Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are potent breeding grounds for cyclones as they have warm oceanic water The funnel like shape of Bay-of-Bengal intensifies cyclones and points it towards India; Also, with the rise in global warming, it is likely that the area would be fountainhead of many more severe cyclones Which agency deals cyclone monitoring in India? The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), it functions under Ministry of Earth Sciences IMD is the principal agency responsible for meteorological observations, weather forecasting and seismology. The IMD has a categorization for tropical cyclones as per various intensities these are : Depression Deep depression cyclonic storm severe cyclonic storm very severe cyclonic storm extremely severe cyclonic storm super cyclonic storm;
