Ford introduced the Everest model to the increasingly popular lifestyle SUV market space back in 2015 in South Africa. The vehicle made quite a splash and Ford South Africa recently utilised an additional R2,5 billion to expand their Silverton manufacturing plant and now we see the latest-generation Everest as with the Ford Ranger carrying a new and updated line of motors and also the addition of a 10-speed automated transmission. Starting at an affordable R552,500 for a 7-seater, the Everest model is available with several engine variants and configurations including; 2.2 TDCi XLS 6AT 4x2 R552 500 2.0 SiT XLT 10AT 4x2 R637 800 2.0 SiT XLT 10AT 4x4 R679 400 2.0 BiT XLT 10AT 4x2 R693 300 3.2 TDCi XLT 6AT 4x4 R715 300 2.0 BiT XLT 10AT 4x4 R744 500 2.0 BiT Limited 10AT 4x4 R819 400 I spent time driving the 2.0 BiT XLT 10AT 4x4. This model brings with it, Ford’s updated 2.0-litre BiTurbo 4-cylinder Turbodiesel motor which delivers 157 kW from a low 3,750 rpm and perhaps even more important 500 Nm of torque developed from between 1,500 – 2000 rpm. All this power mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission makes for an all-conquering family SUV which is powerful and certainly very capable. Much in keeping with what the Everest is all about, the model of course still also features real-world useability. This includes its 3-rows of seating. The familiar and still incredibly capable Ford Sync3 Multimedia interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, many 12V power sockets and USB’s around the cabin and finally impressive ride height. You can have the Everest as 4x2, or 4x4 and with several powertrains and spec options to choose from. Whichever you choose, the one thing that’s for sure is that the Ford Everest remains a popular choice within its market segment owing to its vast array of abilities.
