Copyright 2015 The 16thCavern: All rights reserved Mars is the fourth planet from the sun in the Solar System. It is one of the four rocky planets, along with Mercury, Venus and the Earth. It is much smaller than the Earth, having a volume of only 0.151 Earths, and it is also less dense. It looks red due to the iron oxide on its surface. It is home to Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the Solar System and about three times the height of Mount Everest. Mars has two natural satellites, or moons, Phobos and Deimos. There are large quantities of water ice in the two polar regions of Mars, and the types of landforms seen on Mars strongly suggest that liquid water was once present on the planet. There may be a manned mission to Mars in the second part of the 2020s or later.
