It is located about 9 km south of Teknaf in Cox's Bazar district and 8 km west of the coast of Myanmar at the mouth of the Naf River . It is also locally known as Coconut Ginger because of its abundance of coconuts . It is a well known name among the sea lovers of Bangladesh. The first Arab merchants named the island Jinjira. Note that they used to rest on this island while traveling from Chittagong to Southeast Asia.
