The number of forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon has soared to an unprecedented high, according to data released this week by the country’s INPE space research centre. A record number of fires, over 72,000, have been detected in the world's largest rainforest this year. Brazil's National Institute for Space Research reports that's an 83% increase from last year. Environmental groups say the policies of Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, encourage deforestation of the Amazon, which, in turn, allows for more fires. Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday suggested the fires were being staged by NGOs to embarrass his government. But environmental activists say cattle ranchers have been clearing the forest for more grazing ground and fear this may affect the air quality in the region. Brazil's Amazon rainforest has seen a record number of fires this year, new space agency data suggests.The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) said its satellite data showed an 84% increase on the same period in 2018.
