@Landslide 2020: Women Take the Lead – Bobbie Dolp on the Beebe Garden
In 1933, Mary and Gerald Beebe of Portland, OR, purchased land with a view of Mount Hood for a country estate. Bobbie Dolp, Board President of the Lord & Schryver Conservancy, says of the roughly 200 Pacific Northwest gardens designed by landscape architects Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver, that only six to eight survive with a high level of integrity, and that the Beebe Garden ranks at the top of the list. Work on the Beebe Garden spanned from 1935 to 1940 with continued advising by the landscape architects for several years thereafter. The garden’s present condition is due to exceptional and passionate commitment to its maintenance by the current owners over the past 30 years. However, encroaching development threatens the site.
