@Landslide 2020: Women Take the Lead – Juanita Shearer-Swink on public realm-landscape architecture
White Plains, N.Y.-born landscape architect Juanita Shearer-Swink spent much of her career working for the City of Miami, Florida. She credits the books on art and architecture her parent had and the family garden with spurring her interest in landscape architecture. Public engagement and working in the public realm was attractive because it was about the policy of design. It was personally rewarding because it allowed her to create a broader footprint of what she could give back to the community. It also empowered the communities she worked with because they learned of the broader range of ways landscape architecture could enrich their environments. In 1995 Shearer-Swink was the first women of color become a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
