Delhi Jaipur E-Highway | Kanwar Corridor | Indian Expressways | The Dawn Work starts on 111km kanwar corridor along Ganga canal The public works department has started work on laying a 111 km road to be used by kanwar yatris along the Upper Ganga canal. A pet project of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the road will pass through Ghaziabad and meerut to reach Muzaffarnagar. The corridor would be ready by June next year. Once developed, the road will become an alternative route between Delhi NCR and Uttarakhand and ease traffic load off the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The project was proposed by the chief minister in 2018 with aim to provide alternative connectivity between western UP and Uttarakhand. The stretch will be developed along the canal and benefit the kanwar yatris. the 111km road will have two lanes. It will start from Purkazi in Muzaffarnagar and go all the way up to Muradnagar in Ghaziabad via Meerut. The road will cover 56km in Muzaffarnagar, 42km in Meerut and 12km in Ghaziabad. It will have 10 major bridges, 27 small ones and one railway over bridge. The bridges that are on the canal now are from the British period and were constructed in 1850. Now that traffic load has increased, the bridges have to be constructed again. The UP Bridge Corporation is handling that part. Since the stretch will pass through protected forest areas, the forest department has identified 223 hectares for a survey. Around 40,000 trees are coming in the way. In keeping with afforestation policy, 446 hectares have been identified in nearby areas for planting trees. Unpaved and unguarded along the sides, the stretch that passes along the canal now is notorious for accidents. The bridges on the canal do not have railings and vehicles often plunge into the waterbody. Of an estimated Rs 628 crore earmarked for the corridor, Rs 66 crore have been set aside for installing safety measures on this stretch. The project is expected to be complete d by June 2022. Every year during the kanwar yatra, the highways and expressways are choked with the sea of pilgrims. The corridor aims at solving this problem. It will also provide seamless connectivity to sugarcane farmers from western UP districts to visit the mandis in other districts and sell their produce. Delhi-Jaipur Expressway likely to become country’s first e-highway soon If everything goes as per the plan, India might soon get its first e-highway on Delhi-Mumbai Highway. As per the sources in the knowhow, the Road Ministry stated that the first stretch of e-highway will likely be completed by mid-2022. An electric highway is considered an energy-efficient option to reduce carbon footprint. Reports have it that the government is rolling out pilot projects to build electric highways in India, and that its first stretch will likely be completed by mid-2022. Reportedly, the government is in talks with a Swedish firm for an electric highway on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Trucks and buses will be able to run on the e-highway at a speed of 120 kmph, which as per the reports, will reduce cost of logistics by 70 per cent. According to sources, around 20 percent of the roads on the 200 km long Delhi-Jaipur highway on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be electrified. Separate lanes will be built to recharge the batteries of cargo trucks and other electric vehicles. Modelled after the electrified roads in Germany and Sweden, this 200-km stretch will be able to recharge batteries of vehicles travelling on them. The step is looked upon as a step to bring e-vehicles into greater focus. Although the project is still in its initial stage, as per the reports, discussions to build an electric highway also got delayed due to the second COVID-19 wave. However, the focus still remains on building such a highway to reduce the so-called carbon print.
