But perhaps they do not realise that the grand-looking Parliament House has lived about 25-30 years above its age. The Chief Engineer's report gave the example of other countries, especially Australia, saying that parliament building was built there in 1927 but a new building was constructed after 60 years. So, it is very much needed in India also. This is another matter when no final decision could be taken due to lethargy in the decisions. Considering the construction work in the Parliament complex for a long time, no design could be prepared during Meira Kumar's time and hence there was no concrete estimate of the cost of its construction. But even if library B ̈ LDG, built 12 years ago, is considered the basis, the new Parliament House will be ready at a comparatively lower price. The estimated cost of the new Parliament House, which will be constructed in 65,000 square metres, is around Rs 900 crore. While the library, built in about half of the area, cost about Rs 200 crore 21 years ago. In such a situation, there should be no harm in believing that even if the new Parliament House is being opposed for political reasons, all parties behind the scenes will seem to agree on security and constitutional grounds. The question of the safety of the building has been raised several times inside Parliament itself. The number of MPs is banned till 2026. The number of MPs currently fixed was decided in 1976 on the basis of 1971 Census. Then, there were about 30 crore voters in the country, which has now tripled. That is, in the post-2026 situation, a large number of MPs will also need space to sit and the new building will have to be constructed for the next 100 years. Obviously, there is a need for a new building for both security and the Constitution.
