The Farmer's Life's video: Drainage Tile Intallation Field Work and Conservation Practices

@Drainage Tile Intallation, Field Work, and Conservation Practices
Back in December we contracted a neighbor to tile about 25 acres. This field we call “Muck” has one of the wettest soils on our whole farm. In a dry year it can be very productive, but most years it probably takes a least a minor yield hit if not a total wipeout. Now that it’s drained it should be perennially productive! To get an idea of its water holding capacity look back to the drought of 2012. This was the best corn field we harvested at 147bu/ac with the muck soil area hitting up to 300bu. Fast forward to April 2020, and we are back in the field after letting the soil worked up from the tile plow settle. We are back to level the tile lines down for planting. We have found that letting the soil settle on its own as long a possible seems to be better than leveling it mechanically right away. If we do that it still continues to settle down leaving sunken areas above the tile that need leveled again. We also did a little bit of maintenance on a few acres we have in the Conservation Reserve Program through USDA.
