Now, according to scientists, the safest thing to do is throw the food away. According to the brains at Livescience , the green (or white) patches you see on your food are just the tip of the best before iceberg. They are the spores that give mould its colour. And that's just what you can see - the rest of the fungus burrows deep into your loaf of wholemeal. "Most moulds are harmless but some are dangerous," said Nadine Shaw, technical information specialist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in a podcast. If a mould contains mycotoxins they can cause allergic reactions or respiratory problems. You're most likely to find mycotoxin on mould growing on grains, nuts, celery and apples. So while scraping off the mould and eating the rest may be the less wasteful route, it could also end up being bad for you.
