The Golden Phoenix's video: Slow loris kept as pet delights rescuers with exciting surprise after forest return

A critically endangered Javan slow loris rescued in 2013 has given birth after being successfully reintroduced to the wild, it has been announced. Malabar was kept illegally as a pet in West Java, Indonesia, before being confiscated by the Nature Conservation Agency and taken to the International Animal Rescue (IAR) Primate Rehabilitation Centre. The slow loris was released back into the wild earlier this year after a successful rehabilitation and was fitted with a radio collar so she could be monitored. IAR said she had “adapted well to the wild, was eating natural food and had established a stable home range”. They added: “She had also been observed socialising with wild slow loris and had successfully bred in the wild.” On September 3, Malabar delighted IAR staff when she was spotted in a tree with a “baby clinging to her stomach” after mating with a wild loris. Robithotul Huda, Supervisor of Survey Release Monitoring (SRM), said results from the post-release monitoring indicated that Malabar had adapted well to life in the wild and stood every chance of survival. Alan Knight, IAR CEO said: “It is great news that Malabar has bred naturally in the wild, as this is one of the best indicators of a successful rehabilitation process.
