Neil Hancock, who recently became a volunteer director of the museum, said: “Full-time production of socks and gloves at the framework shops stopped in the late 1920s, although the last master hosier, Edgar Carter, returned briefly to manufacture for the 1940s war effort, making fingers for gloves for soldiers and policemen.” After Edgar died in 1952, the frame workshop was left as it had been for some 34 years – a time capsule of bygone frame work knitting. Neil said: “Following the death of Edgar’s daughter, Grace, in 1986, members of the Greater Wigston Historical Society, Duncan Lucas and the late Peter Clowes, began the dedicated process of preservation.
