DAY HIKING IN WASHINGTON STATE | Summit Lake // Incredible views of Mount Rainier without the Mount Rainier National Park crowds or fee! Just outside Mount Rainier National Park is the trailhead for Summit Lake, at the end of Forest Service Road 7810. The last 6.8 miles of the drive to the trailhead along the forest service road are pretty rough, but if your car can make it up to Mt Pilchuck, you’ll be able to make it to Summit Lake. At Summit Lake, the trail splits into a loop, giving you the option to either go right or left. No matter which way you go, you’ll get epic views of both the lake and Mount Rainier as you make your way up and around the lake. We opted to go right for the gradual climb up. The views of Rainier kept getting better and better as we climbed. At the top, we opted to keep going up to Summit Lake Peak where we lost the view of the lake, but gained the most incredible view of Rainier on the whole trail. Coming back down, we continued going around the loop and made the rough, steep and narrow descent down towards the lake. There is camping near and around the lake, but campfires are not allowed at the lake.
