Here's a glossary of terms: RIC - Royal Irish Constabulary (Irish Police) RUC - Royal Ulster Constabulary (Northern Irish police - created later) A Specials - Full time special police created for Ulster B Specials - Part time Ulster 'paramilitary' police C Specials - A sort of Ulster reserve police who weren't really used IRA - Irish Republican Army - previously the Irish Volunteers Unionist - Those loyal to the British crown, who wish to remain part of the United Kingdom Republican - Those who desired an independent Irish Republic Nationalist - also the Home Rulers, who wanted a devolved administration in Dublin. Sinn Fein - The political wing of the IRA, Republicans. Following on from the last episode, I talk a little bit more about the hunger strike of Thomas Ashe, the conscription crisis, the unravelling of the Home Rule Irish Parliamentary Party, and the German plot. I also talk at length about the 1918 General Election and why it was as significant as it was. I hope to spend the next 5 years detailing and analysing the Irish Revolutionary period. That's just a little game I'm playing for my elite viewers... let me know if you noticed that in the comments. 1918 election graphic By JandK87 - Own work, CC0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=12367751 Thomas Ashe pic By not known(Life time: 1917) - Original publication: Thomas Ashe's personal collectionImmediate source: Fingal Library http://fingal.ie/events/event/default.aspx?guidStr=9e74cdfc-16e5-e511-b100-0050569b0000, PD-US, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=52840314 Thomas Ashe statue by By Eric Jones, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=47602838 1918 UK election By FieldOfWheat - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=58434512 Carson statue By Ross, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=13235048 Picture of James Craig By Walter Stoneman (1876 - 1958) - National Portrait Gallery, London, PD-US, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=51017427 Many thanks to irishelectionliterature.com - They have some great content over there.
