During a family trip, I made a stop at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, VT to see the museum’s collection of railroad equipment, including Central Vermont , a business car, a wooden replica of Old Ironsides (the first locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works), and the Gertie Buck, a self-propelled inspection car. is an I7a 4-6-0 “Ten Wheeler” built in February 1915 by ALCo, being one of four in the class on the Central Vermont Railway. Because it was a medium-sized 4-6-0, with 28,000 lbs. of tractive effort and a power output of 1,500 hp, it served double duty pulling both freight and passenger trains. became known as the “Locomotive of the Presidents”, because of its use on special trains carrying Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Frank D. Roosevelt, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1941, hauled a special train for British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during his visit to the U.S. and Canada via the Green Mountains of Vermont. After was retired in 1956, the Central Vermont gave , along with business car “Grand Isle” (built by the Wagner Palace Car Company in 1899), to the Shelburne Museum, where a shed roof was built over in 1971 for protection from the harsh elements.
