On June 18, hundreds of Belarussians formed a 'solidarity chain' in Minsk to protest the detentions of several opposition candidates in the country's presidential election. Viktor Babryko, a former banker and Lukashenko's leading rival in the election, has been detained and questioned, along with his son and 20 other people close to him. Lukashenko has been president since 1994 and is seeking his sixth consecutive presidential term in the Aug. 9 vote.
