Meet our hero, Maya, a second time mum and only two weeks postpartum. Maya was 37 weeks pregnant with her first child when she discovered her baby was breech. She tried everything to get her baby to turn, including an ECV, but nothing worked. She then had to make the difficult decision between a vaginal breech birth or a planned caesarean birth. In the end, after much deliberation, Maya opted for a caesarean birth. After this birth, Maya found out she had a bicornuate - or 'heart shaped' - uterus, which could explain why her baby was breech. Sure enough, when pregnant for the second time, she found out that again her baby was in a breech position. This time Maya planned a gentle caesarean birth and outlined her preferences so that the birth experience was as natural as possible. Maya also has Thalassemia trait, an inherited blood disorder, which has meant she's needed blood transfusions throughout both pregnancies and births. Despite giving birth during the pandemic, having to adapt her birth plans and navigate additional challenges, Maya had an incredibly positive birth experience and has recovered amazingly well.
