If the BJP loses the Karnataka assembly elections, will that be the final nail for Brand Modi? Looking at how brands grow and transition, I come to the conclusion that it is not the Karnataka election results that will impact the said brand. Brand Modi had been on a gradual decline right after the demonetisation. Then came the sloppy implementation of the GST and finally the handling of the corona pandemic. All these actions and events contributed to the decline of Brand Modi. In the brand life-cycle, the BJP and Prime Minister Modi were able to wrest the initiative from the UPA-2 government through a well-designed strategy against the Congress party. The target voters were identified well enough which resulted in a big jump in the vote percentage for the BJP in 2014. Modi further kept consolidating his brand throughout 2015 and the first half of 2016. He visited several countries and announced his arrival in a charismatic manner. This impressed not only the Indian diaspora but the foreign global leaders as well. But thereafter, the marketing came to an end and it was delivery time. That is where the faults began. Big promises were termed as election 'jumlas' by none other than Amit Shah. Several of the promises were never revised by the Modi government. The mistrust of Modi started in 2017. Though Modi did win the 2019 elections was that due to brand Modi? The answer is debatable and we leave it for some other day. Lastly, Prime Minister keeps himself inaccessible and is bereft of any feedback. His communication with the public remains one-way.
